It was nearing ten o’clock when Poppy finally got the children settled in bed with Pippi between them. Or, rather, into the sleeping bags that had originally belonged to their father and their uncle Chance. Though she suspected they predated even the Foley boys, because they were two oversize olive drab sacks lined with red-and-black flannel more reminiscent of their grandparents’ time. Strange to think those sleeping bags were, in a way, the only heirlooms the children had. Adele’s parents had been gone before she and Logan married and had left her with even less than he had. For children who had so much financial wealth, Quinn and Finn had so little in the way of family.

A pinch of guilt pricked the back of her brain. Poppy and Chance were the only family they had left. Half of their surviving family would be disappearing overnight with her return to Boston. And she had no idea when she would be able to get away to visit them again.

But what was she supposed to do? Chance would be far better at raising them than she would, and Endicott had more to offer them at this point in their lives than Boston did. Once the twins adjusted to their new life, they were going to flourish here. If Poppy were the one to take on their care, she’d have to hire a full-time nanny and squeeze them all into an urban condo where there would be no chasing fireflies or listening to birds or exploring woods. Her life in Boston was in no way suited to raising children, no matter how much she was starting to kind of wish it were.

She kissed Quinn and Finn on the forehead and told them good-night, then left the door ajar on her way out. As she descended the stairs, she heard Chance telling his friends good-night, then the click of the front door as it closed behind them. He had offered to help her put the kids to bed, but she’d told him to enjoy his time with his friends, knowing there wouldn’t be many more opportunities like that for him for a while, once he was flying solo. And she wouldn’t have many more opportunities with the kids herself. As trying as her experiences with them had been at times, Poppy was going to miss Quinn and Finn after she returned to Boston. She was going to miss Chance, too.

“Usually, when the guys come over,” he said as she descended the stairs, “we top off the night with a good rye whiskey. You interested?”

She told herself to say no. Even the single beer she’d had with dinner had made her sleepy. Despite that, “Sure,” she said. “That would be nice.”

They took their drinks back outside. As noisy as the mornings were with the birds chattering and woodpeckers banging, the nights in Chance’s backyard were virtually silent. An owl hooted deeply from one of the trees, and a bat was flapping softly around the
